Marketing – A bad word?
Okay, so first up, I need to clarify something about the title of this site, “Webcomic Marketing.” I think that you probably know what both words mean, but I’d like to delve in a bit further on what I mean by the “marketing” part of the name.
When I say “marketing” I’m not talking so much about traditional media like television ads, billboards, and radio spots; all shouting at your potential audience for attention. That’s “old marketing,” and not what we’ll be talking about here.
What I am talking about is finding ways to get your work seen by people; I’m talking about guerilla marketing; I’m really talking about having a conversation with your audience through a variety of mediums, and even in person.
Fundamentals:
- Be authentically you. Don’t be something that you’re not.
- Don’t try to trick people into checking out or buying your work.
- Do what you say you’re going to do.
- Be accessible, and have an open dialog with your audience.
- Deliver on your brand promise.
“Marketing” doesn’t have to be a bad word; it’s just become that way through a lot of misuse over the last several decades.
